Meet Our Soothing Seven: Palm

Next up on our soothing seven spotlight: palm oil. Nourishing palm is another natural beauty ingredient you’ll find in each bar of Ogo soap, so let’s find out where it comes from and what it brings to the lather.

A Brief Look at Palm Oil

Palm oil comes from the fruit of the oil palm, Elaeis guineensis. Although this palm tree is native to West Africa, it was introduced to Indonesia and Malaysia in the 19th and 20th centuries and found widespread favour for food and personal care usage. Palm oil has such a long history, in fact, that people first began using it for nutrition and skincare back in Egypt nearly 5,000 years ago.

Rich in fatty acids, palm oil is a powerhouse for skin-loving moisturizers. The oil is about 44% palmitic acid, 40% oleic acid, 10% linoleic acid, and 5% stearic acid. Palm oil is also rich in vitamin E, vitamin K, magnesium, phytosterols, and carotenoids.

What Are the Benefits of Using Palm Oil for Soap?

We love palm oil for clean beauty because it’s full of nourishing goodness. The vitamins and fatty acids help the skin in many ways — everything from acting as emollients to strengthening the natural skin barrier to calming inflammation.

Here are some of the benefits of palm oil:

Softens skin. Luxurious fatty acids lead to soft and supple skin. Plus, vitamin E also helps with skin repair for rough or split skin and gives the surface a more even texture.

Reduces inflamed skin. Palm oil is also rich in antioxidants that calm skin and support skin health thanks to antibacterial compounds like flavonoids, phenols, and tannins.

Adds vital hydration. Skin loves nourishment, and our green beauty Ogo soap rich in palm oil doesn’t hold back. From the fatty acids to the vitamin E and carotenoids, palm oil boosts the skin barrier and helps lock in moisture.

Offers anti-ageing properties. Antioxidants and carotenoids are excellent for fighting against environmental stressors and natural signs of ageing. We all want soft, youthful skin! Luckily, palm oil has a good mix of antioxidants that help reduce fine lines, soothe UV-damaged skin, and keep you refreshed.

What Does Palm Oil Bring to Our Soap?

At Ogo Soap, we use the cold process method for making our soaps. This method keeps the nutritional goodness in the bar, so each lather cleans without drying. When we add sustainably harvested, cold expeller pressed palm oil to our cold process soap, we get a bar with a firm texture that lets you enjoy more cleansing for longer. And when we mix it with coconut oil, we get a bar with a luxurious, natural lather.

The Importance of Sustainable Palm Oil

We’ve all heard the press about palm oil and tropical deforestation, where the land’s natural biodiversity gives way to palm plantations and animal species lose their habitat. That’s why we only use palm from a certified sustainable source that meets the strict standards of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO). Green beauty means health for all.
